Complete Encryption for WhatsApp Backups
At WhatsApp, we believe in the sanctity of personal conversations. Just like a whispered secret in a friend's ear, the essence is in ensuring that no one else hears it. Half a decade ago, we fortified our commitment to this principle by introducing end-to-end encryption as a default feature. Today, this shields a staggering 100 billion daily messages for our community of over 2 billion people.
We understand how precious those midnight chats or those memorable photos are to you. And just as you'd want a safe haven for your tangible memories, many of you expressed the desire to safeguard your digital chats, especially in scenarios where you might misplace your device.
So, here’s our next leap forward: from today, we're introducing an added layer of protection for your chat backups on Google Drive and iCloud. This end-to-end encryption ensures that akin to a locked diary, only you hold the key to your messages. In fact, we're proud to share that we're the only major messaging platform offering this high level of backup security globally.
You can now choose to secure these encrypted backups with a password you set or, if you fancy, a unique 64-digit encryption key that only you are privy to. And just so you know, neither we at WhatsApp nor your cloud storage provider will have the means to decrypt or access your chats.
Given our expansive family of 2 billion users, we're thrilled to present this added choice in fortifying your privacy. This feature will be gradually available to those who update to the latest version of WhatsApp. For inquisitive minds, you can delve into details about how to use this feature and the intricate workings behind it through the provided links.
Remember, your trust is our treasure. We're always on the lookout for ways to keep your memories safe, just like old friends would.
